Marathon Training: Week 4

Monday: 3 mile progression run (9:47, 9:22, 9:01) The weather was absolutely perfect for running and I was in heaven, despite the tough workout.  I still need I work on finding my paces and using this darn Garmin!

Tuesday: Crosstrain @ Barry's Bootcamp!  Courtesy of Chobani, I joined a bunch of other blogger/fitness enthusiasts for this kickass workout.  It was half treadmill sprinting (ahhh!) and half lower body strength training.  It killed my legs (in a good way) and we enjoyed delicious Chobani smoothies after class! Yum!

Thumbs up for Bootcamp + CHO!

Wednesday: Rest day!

Thursday: Easy 3 miles + 4 strides- My legs were still sore from Barry's, I felt super slow and the strides were such a struggle!

Friday: Scheduled rest day....But then I learned of a Whitney Houston tribute class at Revolve with one of my fave instructors, Jason! I totally took it easy on the resistance and just danced my way through class!

Saturday:
12 mile long run through Summer Streets! I had such a blast running in 3 boroughs and over 2 bridges with Beth, Annie, Bernadette, Nicole, Liz and Allison.

Sunday: Optional recovery run turned into sleeping in, foam rolling, stretching and playing with this smiley boy:

Total weekly mileage: 18 miles (+ some during sprints at Barry's...)

One month down...3 1/2 left to go!

Marathon Training: Week 3!

Happy Sunday!  Today marks the completion of week 3 of marathon training for me.  I had to skip some workouts and make some adjustments (which I'm totally fine with), but now I'm excited for my life to be back to normal so I can really focus on training this week!

Let's recap...

Monday: Rest day! I got a solid 7 hours of sleep Sunday night, and it was glorious.

Tuesday: Oops! I was supposed to do 3 miles, but I worked late Monday night and decided to skip my run as I had another 15-hour day ahead of me! :(

Wednesday: I joined Beth, Megan and some other awesome bloggers for a demo class at Dance Motivation Fitness with Lindi Duesenberg! We got some free goodies from Sparkly Soul (my favorite), KIND bars, SoyJoy bars, Runa Tea and Vrou Water.  All in all a fun-filled 50min of dancing and sweating!

Post-dance party!
Thursday: 4-ish mile progression run. My awesome coach Abby helped me adjust this scheduled run for my missed workout Tuesday! Unfortunately my Garmin did not cooperate, so I was guessing paces by body feel.  My legs felt strong and I felt like I was working hard, so I'll count that as a success!

Friday: Rest!

Saturday: 10 mile solo long run (10:21 average pace).  I ran from my apartment down and across the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan and back.  The temperature was pretty perfect and I welcomed the on-and-off raindrops.

Oh QB Bridge, I love and hate you!
Sunday: Revolve Body Ride (45min)- I kept my resistance in check for this class because my legs were a little tired, but Revolve still had me sweating!  Jonathan is always so upbeat and fun and his class is an absolute blast!

Total weekly mileage: 14

Bring it on, Week 4!!! :)

Rugged Maniac NYC 2013

Okay, so I'm a little behind on my race recaps...and blogging in general!

Last year, I ran my first Rugged Maniac race with my dad and friend Kim!  We absolutely loved it, so this year we got an even bigger team together for the obstacle race.
So fresh and so clean!
The day started out warm and cloudy with a chance of rain, but quickly cleared for hot and sunny skies.  The course covered just over 3 miles at the Brooklyn Aviator Sports Complex.  There were around 20ish obstacles, including hurdles, walls, mud pits, rope nets, balance beams and a giant (terrifying) waterslide at the finish!

Here are just a few photos of our rugged race:
Climbing walls

More wall climbs

Mud pits!

Muddy smiles!

post-mud pit, pre-waterslide

Trapped in a rope net!

Way too tall waterslide!

We. Are. Rugged!

As you can tell, we had an absolute blast and will definitely be returning next year for more ruggedness!

A Day with the New York Red Bulls

A few weeks ago, I received an invite from the folks at Red Bull to attend a day of health professional networking at the New York Red Bulls Arena.  I have to admit, I laughed when I first opened the e-mail.  I mean, were they really trying to equate Red Bull with health/nutrition? After my initial reaction, I started thinking this might actually be worth attending!  As so many people use Red Bull and other energy drinks on a daily basis, I figured this was an opportunity for me to get more information on the product, ask any questions and be better prepared to work with my clients.  And let's not forget, I'm a pretty big sports fan...

The invitation explained that we would have an informative discussion with representatives from Red Bull, including their internal Registered Dietitian.  In addition, we would be treated to VIP skybox seats, a buffet lunch and field access prior to the game.

VIP on-field access!
Let me just say, Red Bull did not disappoint.  My guests and I arrived around 12pm and after picking up our tickets at Will Call, we literally walked a red carpet to enter the arena.  The skybox suite was beautiful and offered an upscale buffet lunch, including carved meats, sandwiches, salads and sushi, as well as more traditional "sports" fare and sweet treats.

Skybox buffet
I opted for a big beautiful salad (with awesome toppings like asparagus and artichoke hearts) and a few pieces of sushi.

And of course there was plenty of Red Bull for everyone to sample.  In addition to traditional Red Bull and Red Bull Sugar-free, we were able to try the new Red, Blue and Silver editions (cranberry, blueberry and lime-flavored, respectively).  I don't typically use energy drinks nor do I necessarily recommend them, but I appreciated the opportunity to sample these new ones.  And I have to say I enjoyed the flavored ones far more than the traditional Red Bull I've tried in the past.

Lots of Red Bull!

After eating and sampling the new flavors, the RDs gathered in one of the skybox suites for our interactive discussion with a Red Bull representative as well as their nutrition expert, Becki Holmes, RD, CD.  The RDs in our group all came from different areas of the nutrition field, which made for a very interesting discussion!  Some of us were clinically based, some in private practice or community nutrition and some in marketing/research.  I was immediately impressed by Becki's knowledge base and transparancy in terms of the product.  She gave us a history of the company and products, before opening up the floor to discussion.  A few of the other things she mentioned that I found to be interesting/relevant:

-Red Bull was created in the 1980's using four main components: carbohydrates, caffeine, taurine and B-vitamins and these are still the foundation of their recipe today.

-Red Bull sugarfree is NOT labeled as an "energy drink", as carbohydrates and calories are what provide energy and this product has zero carbs and almost no calories.

-Red Bull sponsors and endorses many athletes and entertainers, including skateboarders, skiers and motocross riders.  However, they don't claim to be a sports drink, but rather a functional beverage which may improve performance.

A lot of our discussion ended up surrounding labeling, regulations and marketing claims.  While the actual science and nutrition behind energy drinks is important, these other concerns are definitely good to be aware of when addressing consumer questions and concerns!

In the end, what I had assumed would be a laughable discussion regarding the incorporation of energy drinks in the "nutrition world" turned out to be an interesting and valuable learning experience for me.  I appreciated that the discussion was purely informative and at no time did I feel pressured to promote or endorse Red Bull.   My professional opinion?  Red Bull (and all sugar-sweetened, caffeinated beverages) should be enjoyed in moderation and only as long as it is safe for the consumer.

To top off the day, the Red Bulls beat the Houston Dynamo 2-0!  A big thanks go out to the folks at Red Bull for providing us with a day of energy drink discussion, food and football! :)

Now tell me...Do you drink Red Bull (or other energy drinks)?  Do you use caffeine and energy drinks in your training/fueling?  Have you tried the new flavors?  What do you think?

#BostonStrongNYC

The tragic events surrounding the Boston Marathon affected everyone, runner or not.  And the response of those showing support for Boston has been enormous.  As a community, runners are strong and resilient, but we are also incredibly supportive and giving.  Lastweek, an amazing member of that running (and blogging) community, Brian [Pavement Runner] called out to runners from around the country to get together and show our support in the best way we know how.  By running.  Running to remember and to forget.  Running for those who ran on April 15th, 2013 and for those who may never run again.

So last night I joined 300ish of my fellow NYC runners to participate in #BostonStrongNYC (organized by Abby).  We met up at Tavern on the Green and after a few encouraging words and a moment of silence, we were off to run!

I ended up running two lower loops of the park, chatting with runners friends and ending back by Tavern on the Green, where everyone began creating a "finish line" to cheer each other on.  Amazing.

It was so heartwarming to be surrounded by runners of all shapes and sizes, all showing their support for those affected in Boston.  Each and every time I go for a run, participate in a race or meet a fellow runner I feel so proud to be a part of this running community.  And last night was no exception.  Running just makes my heart happy.

These ladies also make my heart happy.

Share your runner love with me!  Did you participate in #BostonStrong in NYC or your hometown?  Or just enjoy a quiet reflective run on your own?  Tell me!

Race Recap: Cherry Blossom 10-Miler 2013

I spent this past weekend in our nation's capital...eating, drinking and running the Cherry Blossom 10-mile race.
See?  Pretty Cherry Blossoms!
Saturday morning, I met up with some amazing runner/blogger friends: Steph, Beth, Abby and Jen.  We loaded ourselves, our many snacks and foam roller(s) into Abby's car and headed to D.C.  After we arrived, we quickly checked into our fabulous hotel room (big thanks to Beth's dad!) and headed to the expo.  The expo was less than a mile from the hotel and not too crowded so we were able to grab our bibs, shop around and get out in no time!

Saturday night, we had an amazing Mediterranean dinner at Zaytinya.  Complete with hummus, falafel and the most incredible pita!
Delicious carbs.

Kudos to Jen for the great choice of restaurant!  When we were finished fueling up on pita, we headed back to the hotel for our 9pm curfew/bedtime.  The majority of our crew has recently been injured and/or sick, so even without the 7am race start we weren't in any shape to be party animals.  Those of us who were running got our race day outfits together, Abby (AKA cheerleader extraordinaire) got her cowbells ready, and we fell asleep listening to Beth still debating whether or not to run at all.

I hadn't really put in much mileage following the NYC Half, so I didn't have any expectations for this race.  I was mostly looking forward to running a race somewhere other than NY and taking in the sights.  Relative to most other runners, I'm pretty laid back and don't like to stress about paces and finish times.  I'm still competitive with myself and love seeing improvement, but my ultimate goal is to run injury-free and happy for as long as I can! That being said, my "goal" for this particular race was sub 1:40 (10 min miles).

We arrived at the start around 7:15 and snapped a few pictures!
Jen, Me, Beth, Steph and Abby
Beth, Jen and I squeezed through a fence (literally) to line up between the orange and green corrals, while Steph went up ahead to her speedy red corral.  Shortly after we started, I told the girls I was going to go ahead, so we split up.  The first few miles were pretty crowded (as expected with a race of this size) and it was hard to get into a comfortable pace.  I did a lot of weaving and even had to hop up onto the sidewalk a few times.  Maybe for this reason, around mile 2 I started feeling twinges in my left knee.  Although I've never had major issues with it before, I knew it was my IT band.  I immediately slowed my pace but that didn't seem to help.  A sharp pain came and went a few times and I started thinking I would be the one of our motley crew who had to DNF!  I knew the course looped back in on itself a few times, so I gave it some time to see if the pain got worse.  Luckily, it eased up and I decided to keep running.  The early parts of the course had a lot of spectators, which was awesome.  I somehow missed seeing Abby along the course but just knowing she was there motivated me!

Thumbs up for not DNFing!
After the 10K point, we ran into an incredible headwind for about a mile and a half.  It was beautiful running along the water, but the wind was not my friend.  I definitely felt like I was working harder and not keeping my pace.  Not to mention I had tears just streaming down my face from the wind.  Good thing the Marathon Foto photogs tend to skip over me, because I definitely would've looked like I was crying.

At the final turnaround point, the wind was gone and the Washington Monument (aka Finish Line) was in sight.  I knew I was going to come in under my 1:40 goal, so I wanted to push it and see just how much under I could get.  About a quarter mile from the finish, Abby and Steph (who had an amazing PR and continues to amaze me with her speed) spotted me and gave me that much needed motivation to finish strong.  It was a short uphill followed by an easy downhill to the finish line.

Splits:
1-10:08
2-9:38
5K-10:20 (I missed the 3rd mile marker somehow?)
4-8:43
5-9:23
6-9:29
7-9:38
8-9:53
9-9:22
10-9:05

My official finish time was 1:35:43 (9:34 pace).  Since this was my first 10-mile race, that's an automatic PR! Woo! This is also my pace-PR for a longer distance race, which is awesome.

Also awesome?  This RunPix graphic with info on my places based on gender and division and the number of people I passed and who passed me.  Love that!

My only real criticism of this race would be how crowded it was.  Parts of the course were pretty narrow, so it might be better if there were more corrals or the waves were more spread out.

I was definitely hurting after the race and woke up feeling super sore Monday.  I've taken a few rest days and have been stretching and foam rolling like crazy to prevent further ITB issues.  Overall, I had a great race and an amazing weekend with some awesome runner ladies.  I think it's safe to say we'll be back next year!  Who's in?

Thankful Thursday-Back at it!

Whew! For a week that is shortened due to a holiday, this sure has been a long week!  But it's Thursday.  So let's be thankful.  Ready? This week I'm thankful...

...that I ran the WDW Half Marathon.  Even though it wasn't all magical, I'm happy I did it.  Every race can't be perfect.  And the "less than stellar" experiences make us even more appreciative of the good ones, right?  I still ran 13.1 miles, felt great and had a fantastic time in Disney with my family.

...for cute puppies.
Sorry for the disappointment as I'm sure you were expecting a photo of Rocky here!  This is Titan, my nephew puppy and I'm in love.  How cute is he?

...for good things that happen to great people.  I surround myself with some pretty awesome people.  People who are training to run a half marathon to raise $ for LLS.  People who are taking chances and moving on to bigger & better things!  People who aren't afraid to dream BIG. I'm so thankful that I get to share in their accomplishments and celebrate with them!

...for spending the upcoming weekend with my best friends from college! Bring on the wine and laug

...for people who clean off the machines at the gym.  It should be common courtesy and definitely don't think it's too much to ask!

Now YOU tell me--What are you thankful for this week? Do you have any cute puppy photos to share with me? :)

Thankful Thursday: The One Where I'm Going to Disney!

Happy Thursday, everyone!  I'm in a fantastic mood today because it is WDW Marathon Weekend time!  I couldn't be more excited for a 4-day weekend spent running and hanging out with Mickey & his pals!  Oh, and my Dad and Aunt too.  So since I'm already feeling great, let's get started with this week's edition of Thankful Thursday!

I'm thankful...

...that I'm leaving in just a few hours to fly to the Most Magical Place on Earth.  If you'd like to track me as I run the Donald Duck Half Marathon on Saturday, follow this link

And on that note, I'm thankful that this bad boy will be mine in just a few days.

...that nephew baby is almost here!  I told him to try to stay put until I'm back from Disney...but he's coming any day now and I can't wait to meet him!

...for awesome runner friends who are motivating and inspiring.  On Monday night, I joined Steph, Kristin and Kim for a hill workout with the Astoria running club, Hellgate Road Runners.  This was of course intimidating, but everyone was super friendly and ridiculously encouraging.  I'll definitely be joining the ladies for more run club workouts and can't wait to see the BIG things we're all going to accomplish this year!

...that my roomate is willing to watch my psycho dog while I'm away.  For a low-maintenance dog, he's a lot of work and I really appreciate her putting up with the drooling and farting for a few days so I can enjoy the Florida sun!  Thanks, Goof!

Okay, that's all for me.  I guess I have to put in a few hours of work before hopping a plane for my date with the Donald!  :) But don't forget to tell me, what are you feeling thankful for this week?

Race Recap: NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K

This past Saturday I kicked off the 2013 running season with the Joe Kleinerman 10K race in Central Park.  Despite the chilly 32 degree windy weather, I was excited to run my first race of the year with a few thousand of my fellow runners.  Best of all, my cousin Steph and some of her TNT members were doing the race and I was able to cheer them on as well!  Steph is training for the NYC Half with Team in Training and this was her PDR and her first 10K race ever!

Steph & I pre-race
Shortly after arriving in Central Park, I parted ways with Steph so she could meet up with her TNT group and I could do a quick warmup.  As we got settled into the corrals, listening to Mary Wittenberg talk about Joe Kleinerman and all of the people behind-the-scenes that help make NYRR events happen, it felt cold and windy and I couldn't wait to get moving!

The course was one counter-clockwise loop of the park, starting on East Drive and ending on the 72nd Street Transverse.  I tried not to let the cold get to me and kept my pace slow for the first miles, knowing those Harlem Hills were in the near future.  I had forgotten my watch and my Nike+ app GPS is always inaccurate, so I wasn't really sure what pace I was keeping during the race.  Mile 1 & 2 ended up being around 9:45 pace.  I felt super strong going into the Harlem Hills and pushed through knowing I'd be rewarded with some sweet downhills in the second half of the race.  I stopped paying attention to what my intended pace was and just really enjoyed running.  I once again found myself in awe of the beauty of Central Park and got lost in my head.  I started thinking about how thankful I am to be a runner.  I just love running races surrounded by people who appreciate and love this sport as much as I do.  It wasn't until about Mile 5 that I snapped back to reality and remembered I was "racing".  I wasn't trying to PR but started thinking it was a possibility, given how strong I was feeling.  When I hit the 6 mile mark I sprinted my little heart out and had some terrible photos taken of me in the process.  Okay, there was one decent one:

My official finish time was 59:28 (9:36 pace), but I have to admit that my time does not reflect how I felt during the race at all.  I felt strong and definitely thought I had run faster!  As I said earlier, I wasn't trying to PR, so I'm not disappointed.  I'm just happy to have 1 race down for 9+1.  Eight more to go! :)

After I finished, I grabbed my apple and jogged backwards to find Steph and her teammates.  They clearly had been keeping a good pace because it didn't take long for me to find them just before the 6-mile marker.

I am so impressed by their performance and so inspired by their training and fundraising progress.   If you can, please visit Steph's Team in Training page to cheer her on and donateGO TEAM!

A New Year and A New Thankful Thursday!

Happy New Year!  And Happy Thankful Thursday I'm a busy gal today so this one will be quick, but let's start the year off on the right foot by getting down and getting thankful!

This week I'm thankful...

...for ringing in the New Year with good friends and great food at my favorite place, The Saint Austere!  If you live in the city and haven't been yet, GO.  Best polenta ever.

...for Kristin (and Lambeau) getting my butt out the door for a run on New Year's Day! Gotta love Astoria runners! :)
...for new Asics for another year of running!

...that I'll be heading to the Happiest and Most Magical Place on Earth in exactly ONE WEEK! I'm really looking forward to running Disney and spending some time with Mickey & Friends! :)

...that in exactly TWO WEEKS I'll be getting some weekend visitors!  I can't wait to spend time with my college girls and catch up!

That's all I have for now!  What are you thankful for this week?  Getting a fresh start in the New Year?  Are you running Disney too!?!

Last Thankful Thursday of 2012!

Happy last Thursday of 2012!  This year has been incredible and I have so much to be thankful for!  2012 has definitely been the biggest year for me so far in terms of my career.  This year alone, I graduated from my DI program, landed a job as a Clinical Dietitian and passed my R.D. Exam! All the while having a blast with running, family and friends!  Now 2012 has been fantastic to me, but I have big plans for 2013...starting with the Walt Disney World Half Marathon and becoming an aunt in just a few weeks!!! But before I go crazy about all the things I will be thankful for in the new year, let's finish up 2012 with one last round of Thankful Thursday!

This week I'm thankful...

...that the laundromat was open on Christmas Eve.  It wasn't just open...it was a pretty happenin' place, which made me feel much better about spending my evening alone folding spandex and DriFit tees.

...for kisses under the mistletoe! ;)

...for hot showers after cold runs.  I kicked off Christmas morning with a chilly 4 miles, immediately followed by a hot shower, a mug of hot tea and the WDW Christmas Parade on the couch.  Amazing!
Festive 4 miles on Christmas!
...for my new down alternative pillow.  It feels great on my neck and puts me right into a deep and dreamy sleep, that is until I'm woken up by a snorting, growling bully in my face.

...for new nail polish from Santa!  Hello, sparkly lover!

...for all of the amazing people in my life.  I'm a firm believer in surrounding yourself with people that will motivate, inspire and encourage you...and that's just what I've done!  I'm thankful for each and every one of you reading this and am excited by all of the amazing things you're out there doing in this world! (Pardon my cheesiness!)

...for all of the incredible things I have to look forward to in 2013.  I'm hoping to make this my best year yet!

TELL ME--WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS WEEK?...THIS YEAR?!?!
